Pizarro: Werder Are Good Enough For Title

Posted by werdernews on August 19, 2008

Pizarro has returned to his former club after a disappointing season in England at Chelsea where he only found the net twice in 21 appearances mostly as a substitute.

The Peruvian played for Werder between 1999 and 2001 when he scored 29 goals in 56 appearances before moving to Bayern Munich.  While in Bavaria he added 71 goals in 174 games winning three Bundesliga titles along the way.

“Werder definitely have the quality to win the title” the 29 year old said on being unveiled as the club’s latest signing.

“I am really happy to be back here and I hope things work out well for Werder.”

He has joined on a season-long loan and has reportedly set Werder back €1.5 million.

Werder manager Klaus Allofs confessed that the Peruvian had been a long-term target since it became clear his contract with Bayern would not be extended last year.

“We were unable to pull it off back then, but we kept tabs on him” he explained.

International out: Torsten Frings and Aaron Hunt unavailable

Posted by werdernews on August 17, 2008

Werder’s midfield duo of Torsten Frings and Aaron Hunt have had to pull out of involvement with their respective national teams this week. Frings, who has made 77 appearances for his country, informed the German national team coach Joachim Löw following the game in Bielefeld.

“I had some muscular problems during the week. With the strain of the match, the grievances rared-up again and after speaking to Joachim Löw, we decided that I shouldn’t take any risks and instead go through the rehabilitation programme in Bremen,” explained the 31 year old on Saturday evening. The German national team will take on Belgium in a friendly game in Nuremburg on Wednesday, 20.08.2008 (kick-off 9pm).

There was bad news on the international front for Aaron Hunt too. The young winger suffered a muscle sinew tear to his calf in the game against Arminia Bielefeld and has had to pull out of Germany’s U21 European Championship qualifier against Moldova on Tuesday, 19.08.2008. As a replacement, trainer Dieter Eilts has nominated a further Werder player with Mesut Özil filling in for Hunt.

Transfer coup: Claudio Pizarro returns to Werder

Posted by werdernews on August 15, 2008

Claudio Pizarro is returning to Werder Bremen. The Green-Whites will take the striker from English Premier League club FC Chelsea on a one year loan deal until 30.06.2009. It is clear that the Bundesliga club will not attain an option to buy the player but the rest of the details of the deal will remain undisclosed. General manager Klaus Allofs announced on Friday afternoon: “We had been looking into a number of possibilities but this is one we had favoured for some time and we are delighted that the transfer of Claudio Pizarro has now been realised. Claudio is one of the top strikers in Europe and with him we can further improve on our qualities.” Head coach Thomas Schaaf stated: “We’ve known about Claudio’s abilities for years. He has constantly furthered his development and he will breathe new life into our game with his wealth of experience.”

The Peruvian international, who will wear the number ‘24’ for Werder, will be officially presented as a Werder player at a press conference on Tuesday, 19.08.2008 at 9:30am and will then take part in his first training session with his new team mates. He will not be available to his new club for their Bundesliga opener against Arminia Bielefeld. On Friday afternoon he was still in training in London with FC Chelsea.

Claudio Pizarro, who was a Werder Bremen player from 1999 until 2001, during which time he made 56 appearances for the club and scored 29 goals, is delighted about his return to the club: “Back then Werder opened the door to Europe for me. I had two wonderful years there. In the meantime the club has developed very well and is now one of the best teams in Europe. I hope to help Werder with my international experience and am delighted about my new team. The opportunity to play with Werder in the Champions League greatly influenced my decision. Money only played a minor role,” admitted the Peruvian striker.

Since moving from Werder Bremen to FC Bayern München in 2001, the long term Peru national team captain has played in the Champions League every season. As a Bayern München player he celebrated three German championship wins, three DFB Cup wins and he was a World Club Championship winner in 2001. Prior to the start of last season he transferred to FC Chelsea, with whom he reached the Champions League final and was runner up in the English Premier League.

With Werder Bremen Pizarro was also successful on the international stage. The striker had an important role to play in the impressive UEFA Cup performances of Werder during the 1999/2000 season before the Green-Whites were eliminated by Arsenal London at the quarter final stage.

German national coach Löw nominates Tim Wiese

Posted by werdernews on August 15, 2008

Fantastic news for Werder Bremen keeper Tim Wiese! German national team coach Joachim Löw has called the 27 year old into his squad for their first game since the European Championships final. The friendly against Belgium will take place on Wednesday, 21.08.2008 in Nuremberg (kick-off 9pm). The goal keeper will join up with his club-mates Torsten Frings and Clemens Fritz in the German selection whilst Per Mertesacker will miss out on this occasion as he continues rehabilitation after a meniscus operation.

Wiese was nominated to replace René Adler, who suffered a shoulder injury in training with Bayer 04 Leverkusen: “After René was forced to pull out of the game through injury, we decided to offer Tim Wiese the chance of being involved at the international in Nuremberg. He has performed well in recent years both in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. He has earned his nomination,” explained national team goalkeeping coach Andreas Köpke.

The friendly game against Belgium is the only test the German side will have before they begin with their 2010 World Cup qualifiers on 06.09.2008 in Lichtenstein. Frings, Fritz and Co. will play their second Group 4 game against Finland on 10.09.2008.

    Atlético Make Serious Diego Approach

Posted by werdernews on August 15, 2008

After missing out on Valencia’s David Silva, Atlético Madrid are now turning their attention to Werder Bremen’s superstar playmaker, Diego Ribas da Cunha.

According to Spanish daily As, Los Colchoneros have already tabled a €16 million bid for the flamboyant 23 year old, although Werder are expected to hold out for a figure close to €25 million. But the Spanish outfit are confident that a middle ground of €20 million can be reached if the Hanseatic club are willing to negotiate.

Coach Javier Aguirre has been busy searching for a true central playmaker since pre-season began and after his side struggled badly to break down a resilient Schalke defence in midweek in the Champions League qualifiers, his request has suddenly become top priority with the club hierarchy.

Although money is hardly a determining issue for the rojiblancos, the move could be highly dependent on whether or not they can offload Maniche and Georgios Seitaridis to free up some cash.

The pair are still very much involved in the team’s pre-season squad but neither Aguirre nor president, Enrique Cerezo are convinced they have any sort of future at the club.

Atleti will have to move fast, though, as the European transfer market closes in just a little over two weeks, the same time as La Liga’s kick off.

    Diego: Brazil’s architect

Posted by werdernews on August 14, 2008

He has long been the quiet maestro of Brazilian football. While the likes of Ronaldinho, Robinho and Kaka have been grabbing the headlines in Spain and Italy, Diego has been the architect of the continuing rise of Werder Bremen. Now, he is putting his midfield expertise at the service of his country at the Beijing Olympic Games.

Thiago Neves was the two-goal hero for Brazil in their 3-0 victory over hosts China, but in the opinion of many experts, Diego was the real fulcrum of Brazil’s success, laying on a goal for Thiago Neves and getting on the scoresheet himself.

It only reinforced the belief, established in Brazil’s opening two games, that the Germany-based schemer will be a vital cog in Brazil’s machinery if the South American giants are to gain that elusive first-ever Olympic gold medal. Shortly after the match with China in Qinhuangdao, Diego spoke to FIFA.com about his experiences in Beijing so far, and Brazil’s next challenge.

Can you describe your emotions when Werder Bremen decided to release you for this Olympics?
I was very happy, because to play in the Olympics has always been one of my greatest career dreams. And now I have achieved that.

Why was playing here so important for you?
The Olympics is a great competition, which brings together several nations in different sports. And Brazil has not yet won the gold medal in men’s football, so how good would it be for us to be the first?

Has the tournament been everything you dreamed about so far?
Yes, I am enjoying everything so far.

What was going through your mind after you scored against China?
I was very pleased to score my first goal in the Olympic Games. Playing for the Seleçao has always been an emotional experience, and to score a goal is something even better.

During the match you linked up well with Ronaldinho, do you think he is showing signs of getting back to his best?
Yes, he is a sensational player, who is returning to his peak fitness, and is showing all the technical excellence we know about.

The Chinese fans have been delighted to see him carrying a pair of bongos (drums) whenever he enters the team hotel. When do they get played – and do you ever have a go of them?
Brazilian people always love music! These bongos get the group in the mood when we’re playing Pagode.

How much do you think your young midfield team-mates Anderson and Lucas have developed since their move to the Premier League?
These are two great young players, and their careers are evolving quickly there. They are better every time I play with them for Brazil.

With three wins, nine goals and none conceded, it’s been a dream start for you. What’s been key to this success?
Hard work and team unity. We all want that gold medal, you know!

What kind of a test do you think Cameroon will provide in your quarter-final match?
That will be a very difficult game against a team that’s traditionally strong in the Olympics. And now that it’s the knockout phase, we can’t let our attention slip for one moment during the 90 minutes.

Werder consider requirements fulfilled for Diego release

Posted by werdernews on August 13, 2008

Werder Bremen consider their requirements attaining to the release of Diego for the Olympic Games as having been fulfilled, according to a statement made by Klaus Allofs on Monday evening. The clubs general manager, who again held further negotiations over the past few days as to how Werder would be compensated in the event of Diego suffering an injury during the Olympic competition, said: “After discussions with the DFB (German Football Federation), we were assured that we would not incur any financial disadvantage in such an event, but we all hope that doesn’t become an issue. We are satisfied with the solution which has now been agreed to.”

Werder Bremen are also now refraining from issuing a further complaint against the Brazilian Football Federation, for the time being, although the South Americans have still not made contact with the club: “We are quite upset about their behaviour,” admitted Klaus Allofs, who has not cancelled out the possibility of issuing further demands should there be any change in the current situation: “You can’t eliminate that possibility. All clubs who are releasing players must be treated equally. If other clubs receive release fees or other such payments, then we will also be staking our claim.”

    Ailton wants Bremen return

Posted by werdernews on August 9, 2008

The Brazilian – who is currently contracted to Metalurg Donetsk – is well thought of at the Weserstadion after his 28 goals helped the club to the German title in 2004.

And having since spent time at Schalke, Hamburg, Besiktas, Red Star Belgrade, Duisburg and Grasshoppers, the 35-year-old is ready for a return to the club where he enjoyed so much success.

“I live in Brazil and am not going back to Donetsk,” he told the Bild newspaper.

“I hope my contract is terminated within one or two weeks so I am free for Werder.

“I am as quick as before and still have my eye for goal. I want to prove to coach (Thomas Schaaf) in training and I have faith in my ability of becoming top goalscorer once again.

“I want to go back to Werder and will be calling (director of sport) Klaus Allofs in the coming weeks. I hope a transfer to Werder works out.”

Bremen are thought to be in the market for an experienced striker after Ivan Klasnic left the club for Nantes at the end of last season.

Diego proves provider / Tosic strives for return to Bremen

Posted by werdernews on August 8, 2008

Late respite for the Selecao! The Brazilian Olympic selection had their patience tested in the first group game in the competition before Werder Bremen midfielder Diego threaded through a ball to FC Sao Paulo’s Hernanes in the 79th minute for the striker then to beat two opponents and finish from close range. It was to be the only goal of the game.

The side from trainer Carlos Dunga had their job made a lot easier by the sending off of Belgian captain Vincent Kompany just seven minutes before the Brazilian goal. The HSV midfielder was given his marching orders when he received a second yellow card for tugging at Diego’s shirt. 40,000 spectators at the Olympic Stadium in Shenyang erupted in applause for Diego when he was substituted in the 83rd minute.

Werder’s other Olympic representative didn’t get a look-in at all during his sides opener. Dusko Tosic was left on the bench for the full 90 minutes as Serbia attempted to come from behind against Australia (69’ Ruben Zadkovic) and eventually equalised through Slobodan Rajkovic twelve minutes from time. The chances of Dusko Tosic making an appearance at all for Serbia throughout the tournament are doubtful, in particular since the defender has now made it very clear to his club that he wishes to return to Bremen as soon as possible.

Rafinha, Diego to play at the Olympics

Posted by werdernews on August 6, 2008

Schalke and Werder Bremen are to allow their Brazilian players to compete at the Olympics after all, despite winning their case before the Court of Arbitration for Sport earlier on Wednesday.

The u-turn comes after the clubs spent weeks battling FIFA’s position that it was “mandatory” for clubs to release players aged 23 and under for the tournament, which begins in Beijing on Thursday.

Schalke defender Rafinha and Werder Bremen playmaker Diego are included in the Brazil squad.

Although CAS found against FIFA, ruling that clubs could not be forced to release players because the Olympics do not appear on the official FIFA calendar, the clubs consulted each other on Wednesday afternoon before issuing almost identical statements.

“We will release Rafinha to play at the Olympic Games if the Brazilian Football Association quickly create the conditions for his involvement”, said Schalke club general manager Andreas Muller, with Werder’s Klaus Allofs echoing those statements in regard to Diego.

Those conditions include the provision of adequate insurance against injury, and the clubs have already contacted the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) to finalise the terms of a deal.

“This decision is in line with FIFA’s appeal to allow the player to take part in the Olympics,” Muller added. “We now expect the world governing body to support us in our talks with the CBF, particularly as what we are demanding is precisely what FIFA wishes to set down in its regulations in this matter.”

Both clubs begin their seasons on Saturday in the opening round of the DFB-Pokal, with Schalke away to Homburg Saar and Werder Bremen travelling to Eintracht Nordhorn. Schalke also face a Champions League qualifier against Atletico Madrid next week.

With only a few days left before their competitive fixtures begin, both clubs said it was counter-productive to withdraw their players from the Olympics at such short notice.

“Not only do we have to come through the opening fixtures in the Bundesliga, we also have an extremely tough draw in the Champions League qualifying round in the shape of Atletico Madrid,” Muller said.

“We could have done with our strongest squad for these matches. We firmly believe, however, that unfortunately there is absolutely no point in bringing Rafinha back one day before our opening game.

“All the frustration and the huge disappointment he would feel, coupled with the exertions of travelling, would not in our opinion have put him in a position to play to the best of his ability.”

The clubs accused FIFA of delaying the case until the last possible moment in order to make it awkward for clubs to withdraw their players.

“Our decision would have been different if the legal position had been clarified earlier,” Muller said. “In that case we wouldn’t have let Rafinha go under any circumstances.

“FIFA and the CBF were aware of the situation months ago. I believe the matter was deliberately delayed until just before the Olympics to put the clubs in an awkward position.”

Barcelona, who appealed to CAS in an attempt to stop Lionel Messi from playing for Argentina, have yet to respond to Wednesday’s ruling.

However, earlier on Wednesday, Argentina coach Sergio Batista said he remains convinced that Messi will stay with the squad in Beijing.

“We’re taking the situation calmly because Lionel, at the moment, is with us,” he told La Nacion. “Lionel is going to stay playing with us. Both tomorrow and for the rest of the tournament.

“I’m not going to get involved in legal matters. I don’t think Barcelona will call for him asking him to go back. I have every faith in that and also the player’s thoughts reflect what we all want.

“We’re confident Lionel is going to play the entire tournament with the Argentina side. We spoke to him and he told us that he was going to speak to the Barcelona directors and tell them that he wants to stay in Beijing.”

Batista’s comments come despite a claim made on Tuesday by Barcelona sporting director Txiki Begiristain that Messi would be recalled if the CAS ruled in Barca’s favour.

Earlier, FIFA president Sepp Blatter urged the three clubs to allow their players to remain in Beijing.

“The Olympic football tournaments are a unique opportunity for a player as they are high-level competitions that give everyone involved – most notably young players – the chance to gain international experience that will stand them in good stead for the future,” he said in a statement.

“It stands to reason, therefore, that it is not only the player and his national team who can benefit from such an experience, but also his club.”

FIFA’s statement concluded: “FIFA wishes to thank all those clubs who have released their players for the competition and shown great solidarity and Olympic spirit in doing so.”

In their statement, the CAS expressed hope that the decision would not cause major disruption to the tournament.

“In view of FIFA’s recommendation made to the clubs to release their players as well as of the Olympic spirit, the CAS call upon the good will and good sense of FIFA and the clubs to find a reasonable solution with regard to players who wish to represent their country in the Olympic Games,” the statement said.

The format of the Olympic tournament is now expected to be reviewed before the 2012 Olympics in London.

FIFA plan to meet with the International Olympic Committee after the conclusion of the Beijing Games to clarify the issue for the future.

The tournament in Beijing begins on Thursday, one day before the official opening ceremony of the Games.

“Absolutely delighted”: Bargfrede extends deal until 2011

Posted by werdernews on August 6, 2008

Young Werder hopeful Philipp Bargfrede will be pulling on the Green-White jersey for the next three years. General manager Klaus Allofs announced the good news on Tuesday, 05.08.2008: “We are happy to announce that Philipp has prematurely extended his contract with the club until 30.06.2011. He is one of the many talented youngsters in our U23 squad and he made a very good impression in pre-season training with the professional team,” explained Allofs.

Bargfrede was involved in both trainings camps, on Norderney and in Schruns, with trainer Thomas Schaaf’s side. In the pre-season friendly against VfL Oldenburg he also notched up a wonderful goal with a strike from distance: “I am absolutely delighted,” glowed the young midfielder having signed on the dotted line, and he continued: “I still, of course, have a lot of work to do on improving myself in order to make my breakthrough here.”

    Erdem heads to Turkey

Posted by werdernews on August 3, 2008

Werder Bremen have agreed to sell Turkey Under-21 international Alparslan Erdem to Galatasaray for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old defender has come through the youth ranks at the northern Germany side and their director of football Klaus Allofs admitted his regret at seeing him go.

“It is an interesting challenge for Alparslan Erdem because Galatasaray have in mind a good role for him in their team,” he said.

“Nevertheless, it is a real shame because he was on the fringes of our team and would have had chances.

“The fact is, we have a strong competition for places at left full-back and there are lots of young players coming through.

“Galatasaray’s offer was attractive for everybody and was lucrative for us.”

Erdem never quite made the breakthrough at Bremen, the club he joined as a 14-year-old.

He leaves with a few regrets, and expressed optimism about his new challenge.

“I have had a good time here and felt very happy, but I think I have better prospects at Galatasaray,” he said.

“A large part of my family lives in Turkey so I will feel at home very quickly.”

Erdem played a total of 38 games for Bremen’s reserve team and made his debut for the Turkey Under-21s a year ago, going on to earn six caps at that level.

Tosic with a new number and new valour

Posted by werdernews on August 3, 2008

Those who have purchased the new WERDER magazine ‘Spezial’, with all the player profiles and detailed interviews with the general manager Klaus Allofs and coach Thomas Schaaf, will most probably have noticed something unusual. In the player presentation, defender Dusko Tosic’s glowing smile has snuck in between Naldo and team captain Frank Baumann.

And not without reason! From the coming season, the 23 year old will don the number 5 jersey in place of the number 13, which he had worn until now. The Serb has inherited the new squad number from Pierre Wome, who is now at 1.FC Köln. For Tosic personally it is more than just a change of number but also a symbol of what he sees as his chance at a new start on the Weser: “I’m heading into the season with new valour,” remarked the left full-back.

With the exception of the 5:1 win over FC Hansa Rostock, at which point he was on his way to join up with the Serbian Olympic selection in Shanghai, Tosic was involved in all of the pre-season friendly games. General manager Klaus Allofs has also been following the positive developments expectantly: “Dusko has made advances during the pre-season preparations. He’s coming to terms with things better now. He understands what is needed in the Bundesliga.” The Serbs determined performances in training and in the friendly games were rewarded with his first goal for Werder Bremen.

German duo file fresh claims to CAS

Posted by werdernews on July 30, 2008

Werder Bremen and Schalke on Wednesday filed new claims to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in an effort to force their players to return from Brazil’s Olympic squad, despite being unsuccessful with their initial attempts.

The Bundesliga clubs have decided to appeal against FIFA’s ruling, which reiterated on Wednesday that clubs must release players under the age of 23 to participate in the Beijing Games.

Bremen and Schalke have been fighting to keep Diego and Rafinha respectively, and on Wednesday filed fresh claims after failing in their first bids to keep the players in Germany.

A CAS statement on Wednesday read: “The CAS considered that there was no binding arbitration agreement between the parties to hear any of these cases. The German clubs put forward that the jurisdiction of the CAS was based on the Olympic Charter. However, the CAS stated that the Charter was not directly applicable to professional football clubs.

“FC Schalke 04 and Werder Bremen have both filed a new claim with the CAS today against the decision rendered by the Single Judge of the Players’ Status Committee of FIFA earlier on the same day. These two new cases are currently pending before the CAS.

“The two German clubs request that their players (Rafinha/Schalke and Diego/Werder Bremen) be declared ineligible to compete in the Olympic Games due to the fact that they have not been released by the clubs. The two players have been included in the Brazilian Olympic football team for the Beijing Olympic Games.

    Gunners bring in Bischoff

Posted by werdernews on July 30, 2008

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of midfielder Amaury Bischoff from Werder Bremen.

The 21-year-old only made one senior appearance for Werder, in their Uefa Cup game against Celta Vigo in 2007.

However, he was a regular in their youth sides and has been identified by Arsene Wenger as a bright prospect for the future.

Wenger will hope he has unearthed another gem and is not likely to hesitate in giving Bischoff the opportunity to impress.

The youngster, who can play in the centre of midfield or on the left, will also give Wenger more options following the departures of Mathieu Flamini, Gilberto and Alexander Hleb.

Bischoff will wear the No.28 shirt at Arsenal and link up with his new team-mates when they return from a training camp in Austria.

Bischoff was born in France but has represented Portugal at Under 21 level.
