Wiese: Werder Ready For The Title

Posted by werdernews on July 7, 2008

Six weeks before the start of the 2008/09 Bundesliga season, Werder Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese has come out on the attack stating that Werder are ripe for the German league title.

“I’ve been here three years now and finished third, and been runner up twice.  The time has come for us to be on top- we are ready for the title” he vowed.

The 26 year old however has declared himself unimpressed by the innovations being introduced at Bayern by new trainer Jürgen Klinsmann such as an eight-hour day, and new relaxation areas.

“Klinsi has supposedly erected a ‘wellness temple’ with Budha statues around the walls.  It’s nice to look at, but we’ll have to wait and see the effect it has” he joked.

The opinionated keeper has also stated that he expects to see a few more signings at the Weser Stadion before the summer is over.  Werder have thus far signed Euro 2008 participant Sebastian Prödl, Bosnian international Said Huseinovic, and young defender Niklas Andersen.

“There has to be another top quality striker arriving, because we have lost Ivan Klasnic” he said.

He also is looking for a midfield addition following Tim Borowski’s move to Bayern Munich.

Werder face first round DFB-Cup trip to Nordhorn

Posted by werdernews on July 7, 2008

In the first round of this season’s DFB-Cup, Werder Bremen have been drawn against Lower Saxony club Eintracht Nordhorn, who finished in 15th place last season in the German fourth division. The game is set to be played between 07. and 10.08.2008. An exact date will be set and announced in the next few days.

That was the result of the cup draw made by former German women’s international Steffi Jones, who is president of the 2011 Women’s World Cup organisation committee. Other guests at the draw were former German international and current DFB Director of Sport Matthias Sammer and DFB general secretary Wolfgang Niersbach.

Werder trainer Thomas Schaaf acknowledged the news benevolently: “It’s good that we can stay in north Germany. Nordhorn is only two hours drive away along the Dutch border, so that will be interesting for our fans. I know Eintracht Nordhorn very well from my time as an amateur with Werder. They have a real football stadium which has seen many a heated battle.”

In recent years, Werder’s coach has also had contact with Nordhorn: “We signed the striker Ruud ter Heide from Nordhorn in 2004 for our U23 side, and he even trained with the first team at a point. That is the last time that I was there to do some scouting. We certainly won’t be underestimating them.”
