“Merte” extends with Werder until 2012

Werder Bremen fans welcomed the news from Germany’s EURO camp as national team defender Per Mertesacker extended his contract early for two more years until 30 June 2012. The existing contract would have run out in 2010. Werder’s managing director Klaus Allofs announced the agreement with the 23-year-old interior defender Saturday night.
“By extending his contract early, Per Mertesacker sent an important signal. Signing on for a long-term commitment with Werder shows how highly both sides regard each other. This is another step for us to putting a team together in the future that can live up to our international expectations and establish itself among the European elite level.”
A continued relationship is a matter close to the heart of “Merte”, who held the final talks with Klaus Allofs after the quarter-final victory over Portugal. “We have had some talks since the end of the season. But the exciting sports action did not leave us much time to get things finished. Now it’s that much nicer. It’s a great feeling the success here at the EURO and having the feeling that Werder definitely wants to continue working together with you,” said Mertesacker.
