Marseille: Werder fans get active against racism

Posted by werdernews on April 23, 2008

Under the motto ‘Kick out Racism and Violence’, the Bremen Fan-Project travelled to Marseille from 03 – 10.04.2008 with the Werder fans to take part in an international youth exchange programme. The fan event was organised by ‘Eurocircle’, an association for youth exchanges based in Marseille. The hosts were the ‘Ultras of the South’ winners from Olympique Marseille, who have been active against racism in football for over 20 years now and wish to extend their international connections.

In Marseille, the Werder supporters, along with fans of Olympique Marseille, SSC Neapel, Betis Sevilla and Galatasary Istanbul, took part in a transnational workshop on the subject of racism in football. The highlight of the youth exchange was a trip to see the game between Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyon, for which the participating groups prepared and presented an anti-racism choreography.

The Fan-Project Bremen, the staff from ‘Eurocircle’ and the ‘Ultras of the South’ winners would especially like to thank Werder Bremen for the support they received. For the trip, Werder issued the group with a Diego jersey and a match ball signed by all the players to take along with them. With the money raised in a public auction for the items, further projects and activities against racism, antagonism against foreigners and violence between rival fan groups in the respective clubs will be financed.

    Wome eyes pre-summer comeback

Posted by werdernews on April 23, 2008

The training pitch was fuller in Bremen today than it had been for some time. From the complete Bundesliga squad, only three players were missing from the Tuesday morning session – Frank Baumann, Sebastian Boenisch and Peter Niemeyer. “There’s nothing new from that particular trio. It’s not as if we’re expecting them back in full team training tomorrow or the day after,” explained coach Thomas Schaaf, who was happy to see another long term injured player finally return.

Pierre Wome made his comeback in training after several months out of action through injury and his presence was somewhat unexpected by both the fans and his colleagues. Wome had complained of a groin problem during pre-season preparations in summer and hadn’t made an appearance in training since 25.07.2007. He had thought his suffering was over in January when he returned to team training and even played the second half of a friendly against Hajduk Split but the groin problem flared once again and the 29 year old was forced into a further session of rehabilitation, which he went through on foreign soil. Pierre Wome had been going through a specialised individual training programme in Bremen since Monday, 14.04.2008.

The player himself was clearly delighted about his return to the training pitch and getting involved with his team mates once again as he went about the session in high spirits and in highly motivated fashion. “That’s absolutely normal when you have just been a bit part player for such a long time and are constantly just going through rehabilitation exercises. It’s really special then when you get out on the pitch with the whole group again,” remarked an understanding Thomas Schaaf.

    Mertesacker: I’m Staying At Werder

Posted by werdernews on April 23, 2008

Reports in Germany had suggested the 23-year-old centre-back had already reached an agreement with Uli Hoeness and co to follow teammate Tim Borowski to the Allianz Arena this summer.

But in an interview with tabloid Bild, Mertesacker denied anything had ever happened with the Rekordmeister.

    No Contact Made

“In actual fact I never had any contact with them,” he revealed. “When I heard that Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had rung up Werder to deny any interest in me I thought that that would be the end of all this. Werder, Bayern and I have all made it clear – the subject has been dealt with.”

The defender admitted to having contact with incoming Bayern boss Jürgen Klinsmann, but stressed that that stemmed from the manager’s days as head coach of Germany.

Bayern Munich matters have never been discussed, he continued, admitting to being a little surprised by Klinsmann’s appointment at the Allianz Arena. “He’s never trained a club before,” Mertesacker pointed out. “But I’m happy for him.”

    New Deal At Werder?

As for his own career, Mertesacker revealed he would sit down with Werder sporting director Klaus Allofs at a later date to discuss his future at the Weserstadion. “I signed here for four years because I really wanted to establish myself,” he said of his decision to join Bremen from Hannover after the 2006 World Cup.

“A lot can happen between now and 2010 and I’d like to reach new heights with Werder. The aim is to develop myself at Werder and to give the mighty Bayern a challenge. The signs are good because of the club’s smart transfer policy.
