    Boenisch suffers injury blow

Posted by werdernews on April 8, 2008

Full-back Sebastian Boenisch will be unavailable to Werder Bremen for at least two weeks. In training on Sunday, following the away win at Hertha BSC Berlin in the Bundesliga, the defender suffered a muscular tear to his right thigh: “During a race for the ball I broke into a sprint and then it snapped”, explained the bitterly disappointed 21 year old about the moment when the injury occurred.

It is ironic that it should happen now, with his former club Schalke 04 visiting the Weser Stadium for this weekend’s top clash in the Bundesliga, that the young defender should suffer such a set-back: “I’m quite disappointed because I’d really been looking forward to this particular game for some time now”, said Boenisch.

Following a knee operation last autumn, Sebastian Boenisch had just battled his way back into the Werder first team after two gruelling months break, and has now made seven Bundesliga appearances for the Green-Whites – six of which in the starting eleven.

    Schaaf praises the Werder fans

Posted by werdernews on April 8, 2008

Finally an end to Werder’s negative run! Finally a win again in the Bundesliga! The away win against Hertha BSC Berlin at the weekend saw the Green-Whites form curve take an upward turn and that which has clearly relieved coach Thomas Schaaf: “It’s very important for all of us to experience some success again following the criticism we have had to endure due to our more recent results. It’s a nice feeling and it does us good whilst helping us along our way”, said Schaaf.

Schaaf did have to admit though that not yet everything is running totally smoothly: “We can’t afford to paint everything rosy now. We must continue to work well and intensively.” And that is all the more important now that the visit of FC Schalke 04 to the Weser Stadium is looming. The ‘Royal-Blues’ are a direct competitor for one of the Champions League qualifying places.

Schaaf went on to heap praise on the almost 12,000 fans that made the trip to Berlin for last Saturday’s game: “That kind of support is exemplary and vitally important to the team”, acknowledged Schaaf.

Kruse and Schindler on U20 duty

Posted by werdernews on April 8, 2008

Werder’s young hopefuls Max Kruse and Kevin Schindler, who was drafted into the squad at short notice, will be in action for the German U20 side on Wednesday, 09.04.2008 when they take on Italy in an international clash. The game, which gets underway at 6:10pm, will be broadcast live on German sport channel DSF.

The youth team coach Frank Engel has put his fate in a side which includes Max Kruse, goalkeeper Martin Männel from Cottbus, defender Arne Feick, midfielder Änis-Ben-Hatira (HSV) and Manuel Conrad (SC Freiburg) – who are the most experienced players in the side, with four international caps apiece. Werder’s Kevin Schindler has thus far made one appearance for his country at U20 level.

In the current international table, Germany, who have seven points from four games, are in second place behind leaders Austria.
